Scott Speed: A Journey in Formula One
Beginnings and Red Bull SupportScott Andrew Speed was born in Manteca, California on January 24, 1983. Like many Formula One drivers, his journey began in karting at the age of 10. In 2003, he joined the Red Bull Junior Driver Program.
Junior Formula Success
As a Red Bull junior, Speed competed in British Formula 3, won the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup in 2004, and claimed the German Formula Renault title. His performances earned him a test driver role with Red Bull Racing at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2005.
Debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso
When Red Bull purchased Minardi in 2005, Speed was announced as a race driver for the newly formed Scuderia Toro Rosso team alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi. His debut came at the Bahrain Grand Prix, finishing 13th.
Mixed Results and Incidents
Speed's Formula One career was marked by a lack of consistency. His best qualifying result was 11th. In 2007, he faced criticism for multiple accidents and retirements from technical failures. Notably, he clashed with WilliamsF1 driver Alexander Wurz at the Canadian and British Grands Prix.
Clash with Team and Replacement
After a wet and incident-filled European Grand Prix, rumors spread of an altercation between Speed and Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost. In the middle of the 2007 season, Speed was replaced by Sebastian Vettel, a reserve driver from BMW Sauber.
Post-Formula One Career
Speed currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife, Amanda S. Mathis. His most notable Formula One achievement was finishing ninth at the Monaco Grand Prix.
