Biography of Sean Bradley
Sean Bradley is an American conductor, composer, violinist, music theorist, educator, and producer. He is the director of City Opera, Los Angeles, an organization that promotes the performance of contemporary classical, crossover, and ethnic music. Bradley is also the founder of Bravoflix, the first online streaming service in the United States.
Conductor and Director
As a conductor, Bradley has earned a reputation as a strong advocate for contemporary music. In 2004, he founded City Opera, Los Angeles, with the aim of providing a wide-ranging education and an expanded program. Under his leadership, City Opera won a contract that allowed the company to distribute educational services throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District. Unlike most opera companies, City Opera features performers from all genres and specializes in concert tours and studio recordings.
Violinist and Soloist
In addition to his work as a conductor and director, Bradley actively performs as a first and second violinist with many orchestras in Southern California and around the world. He was the first soloist to perform music by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of the iconic musical "Wicked." Bradley has also been a concertmaster in several orchestras.
Collaborations and Education
Bradley has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Elmer Bernstein, Christoph von Dohnányi, Jerry Goldsmith, Quincy Jones, John Williams, and Yuri Temirkanov. He has also performed with artists like Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, and Marco Antonio Solís, among others, in classical, pop, and jazz genres.
As a dedicated educator, Bradley continues to work with many students in pre-professional, public, and private schools throughout Los Angeles. He has taught in a school orchestra in a middle school and served as a teacher in a school for troubled adolescents. As a former faculty member of the Orange County High School of the Arts, he taught music theory, violin, and computer music notation. Bradley has also directed string ensembles at the Colburn School.
In collaboration with Marco Antonio Solís, Bradley launched a program to train and organize tours for musicians, preparing them for performances in front of large audiences.
Education and Military Service
Bradley is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where he studied violin with Russian violinist Ilya Kaler, composer Christopher Rouse, and Alan Shindler. He also studied conducting with John Farrer and briefly with Jorge Mester. Additionally, Bradley lived for a period in the studio of renowned Dutch artist Jan H. Hoowij thanks to the support of his widow.
Furthermore, Bradley is a former ranger and member of a special forces unit in the US military and has served as part of the presidential escort. In 1994, he served in Iraq and Kuwait.
