Early Life and Education
Viktor I. Marushinwas born on February 20, 1920, in Uman, Ukraine. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History (MIFLI) in 1941.
Military Service
Marushin served in the Great Patriotic War and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (VKP(b)) in 1943. He was awarded the Medal "For Courage" and other military honors for his bravery.
Film Criticism and Scholarship
Marushin began writing about film in 1946. He published extensively on the theory and history of cinema. From 1957 to 1970, he served as the editor-in-chief of the annual "Questions of Film Art."
Academic Career
Marushin taught at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) from 1948 to 1954 and at the Russian State Institute of Theater Arts (GITIS) from 1954 to 1971. In 1971, he joined the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU (AON).
Doctorate and Professorship
Marushin earned a Doctor of Arts degree in 1974 and became a professor the same year. He was admitted to the Union of Soviet Writers in 1973.
Recognition and Awards
Marushin received numerous awards and honors, including:- Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1980)
- State Prize of the USSR (1987) for the screenplay "Mikhail Romm: A Confession of a Film Director"
- Order of the Red Banner (1945)
- Order of the Patriotic War (1st and 2nd degrees)- War Cross (Czechoslovakia)
- USSR Filmmakers' Union Prize (1973, 1981)
