After graduating from the Kharkiv Institute of Radio Electronics as an engineer-programmer in 1972, Gubnitsky worked as a programmer for over 20 years in various organizations. Concurrently, he shared his knowledge as a lecturer in programming at leading universities in Kharkiv. In 1988, he earned his doctorate in automated information systems and systems of computer-aided design.
Chess Accomplishments
Gubnitsky's chess career has spanned over five decades. He has achieved notable titles, including Master of Sports of the USSR (1980), International Master of the ICCF (1981), and Academician of the Art of Chess.
Among his impressive victories are the Kharkiv Oblast Championship, the Central Council of the DSO "Spartak" Junior Championship, and the USSR Team Championship for Juniors (with the Ukrainian team). He also placed second in the 18th European Individual Correspondence Chess Championship and triumphed in the Evrard-Delannoy Cup (Kharkiv team), Danube Cup (Ukrainian team), and Team European Correspondence Chess Championship (USSR team).
Trainer and Author
Gubnitsky has played significant roles as a chess trainer and author. He has coached promising young players, including Irina Dubinka-Romanova, who later became a grandmaster. Gubnitsky's literary contributions include several highly regarded books on chess.
