Early Life and Education

Born as Shloyme Goldstein in Chişinău, Bessarabia, to Voliko Itskovich Goldstein and Hova Duvidovna, Semion Zlatoff (born 1898) began his musical education at the Chişinău Music School of the Russian Musical Society (1908-1912). In 1916, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, studying horn and military band leadership. He completed his composition studies under Alexander Glazunov.

Career in Romania

After graduating, Zlatoff returned to Chişinău where he conducted a brass band under the pseudonym "Gold." From 1919, he resided in Bucharest, where he served as a trumpeter in the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra under conductor G. Georgescu (1919-1927). He was also a chief inspector of military and navy bands (1927-1928), and a trumpeter and conductor at the Bucharest Music and Drama Theater (1929-1940).

Return to Chişinău and Professorship

In 1940, after Bessarabia's incorporation into the USSR, Zlatoff returned to Chişinău and changed his name to Semion Vladimirovich Zlatoff. He became a professor at the Chişinău Conservatory (founded by composer David Gershfeld), where he taught composition.

Zlatoff is renowned for his works and arrangements for wind orchestras. Notable compositions include:
