Early Life and Political Activism
Borut Kraigher was a prominent Yugoslav and Slovenian political figure. Born in 1914, he studied medicine before joining the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) in 1934.
Partisan Movement and Post-War Career
During World War II, Kraigher actively participated in the partisan movement against fascist occupiers. After the war, he held various government positions in Slovenia and Yugoslavia.
Presidency of the SFRY
In 1981, the Slovenian Parliament elected Kraigher to the Presidium of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). He served as Chairman of the Presidium from 1981 to 1982.
Economic Reforms and Kraigher's Commission
During his presidency, Kraigher led an expert commission to address Yugoslavia's economic crisis. The commission's report critiqued the socialist economic system and called for market reforms. However, its recommendations were ultimately not implemented.
Retirement and Later Years
In 1986, Kraigher retired from politics and returned to private life in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He passed away in 1993, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent figure in Yugoslav history.
