Early Life and Education
American businessman and statesman, Robert Adams Mosbacher Jr. was born into a wealthy family in White Plains, New York. He graduated from Yale University in 1939 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
Business Career
Mosbacher joined Armco, the steel company founded by his grandfather. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the Pacific front and was discharged as a lieutenant.
After the war, he returned to Armco and rose through the ranks, becoming its first vice president in 1964 and chairman of the board in 1971. He left the company in 1982.
Public Service
In 1981, Mosbacher became chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and co-chaired a presidential bipartisan task force to encourage private sector initiatives. From 1979 to 1984, he served as vice chairman of the U.S.-USSR Trade and Economic Council.
Secretary of Commerce (1987-1989)
In 1987, Mosbacher was appointed Secretary of Commerce by President Ronald Reagan. During his tenure, he established the Commerce Hall of Fame and the Office of Commercial Space, promoting the use of space for commercial purposes.
