Biography of Sergey Lugansky

Sergey Danilovich Lugansky was a fighter pilot and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on September 2, 1943. On July 1, 1944, for new heroic feats in battle, he was awarded a second "Golden Star" medal. He was also awarded many orders and medals. Sergey Danilovich Lugansky was Russian by nationality and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1942. He was sent to the Orenburg Military Aviation School of Pilots on a Komsomol ticket and graduated from it in 1938. After finishing school in 1940, Junior Lieutenant S. D. Lugansky began his service in the Soviet Army units. He participated in battles against the White Finns, made 59 combat flights, and shot down an enemy plane. During the Great Patriotic War, he fought on the Southern, Steppe, Voronezh, 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts. He commanded squadrons, and from June 1944, a fighter aviation regiment. In total, during the war years, he made 390 successful combat flights, personally shot down 37 enemy aircraft and 6 aircraft in group battles. After the Great Patriotic War, he graduated from the Red Banner Military Air Academy. For many years, Major General of Aviation S. D. Lugansky passed on his rich combat experience, knowledge, and passionate love for aviation to young pilots. Since 1964, due to illness, he has been in reserve and lives in Alma-Ata.
