Vasily Nikolayevich Koryakov: A Hero of the Soviet Union
Early Life and EducationVasily Nikolayevich Koryakov was born on July 23, 1906, in Izdeшково, Smolensk Oblast. After completing nine years of schooling, he served as secretary of the Izdeшкоvo Rural Council and later worked as a mechanic and accountant in Yaroslavl.
Military Career
In 1927, Koryakov joined the Red Army. Over the next few years, he graduated from the Special Services Military School (1928), the Volsk United School of Pilots and Aviation Technicians (1931), and the Orenburg Military School of Pilots (1932). In 1938, he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
World War II
Koryakov entered combat during World War II in May 1943. He led his regiment with distinction, carrying out 102 successful sorties against enemy forces.
Recognition and Honors
On August 18, 1945, Lieutenant Colonel Koryakov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his outstanding leadership and combat achievements. He also received the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.
Post-War Service
After the war, Koryakov attended the Advanced Aviation Commanders' Courses at the Air Force Academy (1951). He retired from military service in 1961 with the rank of colonel.
Later Life and Legacy
Koryakov spent his retirement years in Moscow. He passed away on August 20, 1990, and was buried in the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. A pioneer troop at the Nikolo-Pogorelovskaya School in the Safonovsky District was named in his honor.
