Biography of Sergei Eliseev
Sergei Ivanovich Eliseev, an exceptional Russian Soviet athlete, was born in 1878 in the city of Ufa. From a young age, he was passionate about physical exercises. Together with his brother Alexander, they would attend the circus and admire the performances of athletes, trying to replicate the tricks they saw in their own yard. Their training was dedicated and intense, starting with morning jogs, followed by exercises with dumbbells and cold water showers. In the evenings, they would train with weights and barbells.
Rise to Fame
Eliseev and his brother became renowned throughout Bashkortostan for their strength, but they had not competed in major championships. However, in April 1898, Sergei Eliseev traveled to the second Russian championship in St. Petersburg. He secured second place (with the first place being won by Georg Hackenschmidt) and set two world records: he performed a "spread" with weights of 28.8 kg and 32.8 kg, and he held a spherical weight of 60.8 kg in a horizontal position. For these records, the Athletic Society awarded Sergei Eliseev a special gold medal.
In February 1899, he traveled to Milan for an international heavyweight championship. The participants in the competition were not divided into weight categories. Eliseev was the lightest athlete, weighing 81.5 kg, while the others weighed over 100 kg. Eliseev won the championship and became the first Russian world champion in heavyweight athletics.
Continued Success and Retirement
Upon returning home, Eliseev continued to train and soon won the Russian championship, surpassing Georg Hackenschmidt, G. Meyer, and I. Shemyakin. He also set two more world records. Eliseev was offered the opportunity to become a professional athlete, but he chose to return to his hometown of Ufa, where he started working as a fitter in the railway workshops. He continued his training and improved his results. In 1901, he achieved outstanding performances, lifting 144.9 kg with two hands and 174.5 kg with a jerk.
In 1903, Eliseev participated in the World Championship for professional heavyweight athletes in Paris and secured second place. The championship was won by P. Bonn, a three-time champion of the competition. It should be noted that the participants in this championship had to perform eleven exercises, some of which Eliseev had never attempted before and had to learn on the spot.
Later Life
In 1905, Eliseev, who had previously been involved in revolutionary activities, led a combat group of the railway workshops and was arrested and exiled to Yakutia. In 1919, he moved with his family to Tyumen, and in 1925, he settled in Tomsk, where he worked as an accountant. He never gave up on sports and organized a weightlifting section, conducting training sessions with young people. He also performed athletic numbers at festivals. Sergei Ivanovich Eliseev passed away in 1938.
