Ukrainian Football Star: Serhiy Afanasiev

Early Life and Career

Serhiy Afanasiev was born on 24 September 1973 in Kherson, Ukraine. As a dynamic midfielder and defender, he played for several clubs, including SKA Odessa, Tavria Simferopol, and FC Volyn Lutsk.

National Team Appearances

Afanasiev represented Ukraine twice at the international level, both in crucial matches against Portugal during the qualifying rounds for Euro 1996. He made his debut on 5 October 1996, replacing Hennadiy Zubov in the 56th minute. In the second match on 9 November, he played the entire first half.

Coaching Journey

In 2013, Afanasiev embarked on his coaching career as the interim manager of FC Helios. He was later appointed as the club's permanent head coach in June of the same year. However, he resigned in March 2015.

Four months later, he joined FC Okean (Kerch) as a coach. Following his move to Crimea, he obtained Russian citizenship. In 2016, he was promoted to head coach of Okean. Although he was dismissed in 2017, he remained on the coaching staff. Afanasiev returned as head coach in 2018 after the departure of Oleg Leshchinsky.
