Sergei Vasilievich Gusovsky: Soviet Industrial Leader
Early Life and CareerSergei Vasilievich Gusovsky was born on February 22, 1915, in Radomyshl, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. In 1928, his family moved to the village of Veprin, where he began his working life in 1930. In 1932, he enrolled at the Kyiv Machine-Building Rabfak, then went on to study at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute from 1933 to 1939.
At Arsenal Plant
In 1938, Gusovsky began working at the Kyiv Arsenal Plant as an engineer in the technical control department. He subsequently served as sector head, shift superintendent, assistant shop manager, and deputy shop manager. The outbreak of World War II found him in this position.
Evacuation of Arsenal Plant
In July 1941, the Arsenal Plant was evacuated to Воткинск. Gusovsky played a key role in this process, overseeing the dismantling of equipment and the relocation of workers. He became head of one of the evacuation trains, which arrived at Воткинск in just six days. The plant resumed production within three days, under Gusovsky's leadership.
Post-War Work
From 1942, Gusovsky worked as head of the technology department at the design bureau in Kolomna. In 1943, he became chief engineer of the design bureau of the NKVD. In 1949, he was transferred back to the Kyiv Arsenal Plant, where he eventually became director (1966) and general director (1975).
Political Involvement
Gusovsky was actively involved in politics, serving in various positions in the Pechersky district and the city of Kyiv. He was also a deputy of the Kyiv City Council and the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR.
Legacy and Death
Sergei Vasilievich Gusovsky died on October 30, 1983, in Kyiv and was buried in the Baikove Cemetery. He was recognized for his exceptional contributions to the Soviet industry, being awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor in 1975.
