Early Life and Military Career in the USSR
Valeriy Anatoliyovych Vasylchuk was born on May 4, 1952, in Novosyolovka, Ukraine. He enlisted in the Soviet Army in 1969 and graduated from the Kharkiv Guards Higher Tank Command School in 1973. Vasylchuk served in tank forces, initially as a platoon commander in the Kyiv Military District, before commanding a tank company, a battalion staff, and a tank battalion.
In 1983, he completed studies at the R. Ya. Malinovsky Military Academy of Armored Forces. He rose through the ranks to become chief of staff and commander of a tank regiment and then deputy commander of a motorized rifle division.
Military Career in Independent Ukraine
After Ukraine's independence in 1992, Vasylchuk joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He served as commander of a mechanized division, chief of staff of an army corps, and commander of an army corps. In 2000, he graduated from the National Defense Academy of Ukraine.
From April 2002, Vasylchuk held the post of Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was appointed Chief of General Staff and First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in January 2004. On July 19, 2004, he became Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
On June 16, 2005, Vasylchuk was promoted to the position of Chief of General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He also became a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine in February 2007.
In August 2007, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko awarded Vasylchuk with the rank of General of the Army. On October 18, 2009, Vasylchuk resigned from his military position due to health reasons.
Political and Advisory Roles
Vasylchuk served as a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from 1998 to 2002 and was a member of the Commission on State Awards and Heraldry from April 2005 to November 2006. After leaving the military, he was appointed as an advisor to the President of Ukraine.
Awards and Recognition
Vasylchuk received numerous awards during his distinguished military career, including the Orders of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 3rd, and 2nd class, numerous medals, and a personalized firearm.
