Biography of Sergey Koblov

Sergey Koblov was born on November 22, 1915, in the village of Kobi, in the present-day Kazbegi district of the Republic of Georgia. He came from a peasant family. Koblov completed 7 years of primary school and the aviation school of the Civil Air Fleet in the city of Bataysk, Rostov Oblast, in 1936. After being conscripted into the Red Army in 1941, he was sent to courses for fighter aviation squadron leaders and served in the 160th Aviation Regiment.

Fighting in the Great Patriotic War

Koblov fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War from August 1941. He achieved his first victory in the autumn of 1941, forcing a German reconnaissance Ju-88 to land near our troops. From 1942, he served in the 182nd Fighter Aviation Regiment. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire and enemy fighter attacks, Koblov repeatedly attacked group leaders of German bombers and destroyed them. By September 1942, he had shot down 9 enemy planes in 17 aerial battles.

Heroic Achievements

On February 12, 1943, for his courage and military valor demonstrated in battles against the enemy, Sergey Koblov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. His most notable battle took place on May 11, 1943, when he shot down a Ju-88 bomber and 2 FW-190 fighters while repelling an attack on the railway junction of Valuyki. In total, the flight led by him shot down 7 German aircraft. Koblov flew most of his combat missions on "Yak" planes and shot down 22 enemy planes during the war, more than half of which were twin-engine heavy bombers: Do-215, Do-217, He-111, Ju-88.

Post-War Service and Legacy

After the war, Sergey Koblov continued his service in the Air Force. From May to September 1946, he served as a senior inspector for pilotage technique in one of the Western Military Districts. In 1947, he completed officer training courses and later commanded an aviation regiment. On June 17, 1954, Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Koblov died during the testing of a new jet fighter. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, and several medals. Streets in the cities of Ordzhonikidze and Tskhinvali are named after him, and there is a monument in Ordzhonikidze and a bust in the city of Eazbegi, Georgia, dedicated to the Hero.
