Early Life and Education

Mykhailo Illenkowas born in Kyiv, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). He earned a degree in radiophysics from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Subsequently, he pursued a degree in film directing from the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts named after Ivan Karpenko-Kary. In 2000, he completed his postgraduate studies at the same institute under the guidance of renowned filmmaker Yuri Ilyenko.

Professional Career

Filmmaking and Screenwriting

After graduating, Illenko worked as an assistant director at the Dovzhenko Film Studio on films such as "Karmelyuk" (1985) and "Where War Rumbles Somewhere" (1986). His directorial debut came with "Letter Without a Return Address. Film 91" (1993) as part of the documentary series "Unknown Ukraine: Sketches of Our History."

Photography and Journalism

Throughout his career, Illenko worked as a photojournalist for various publications, including "News from the Cinema Screen," "Ukraine," and "Culture and Life." His notable works include the slide films "Picturesque Ukraine," "Kamchatka," and "Ivan Kozlovsky."

Documentary Films

Illenko directed numerous documentaries, including "Harvest" (1998), "Autumn Wedding" (1998), "Oh Ivan, and Kupala" (1998), "Virsky: Spirit of Ukraine" (1998, co-directed), "Echo of Forgotten Skies" (1998, wrote the screenplay), "Letter Without a Return Address," and "Polessian Images."

Academic and Educational Pursuits

In addition to his filmmaking and journalistic roles, Illenko was an assistant professor at the Karpenko Kary National University of Theater, Cinema, and Television in Kyiv. He earned a Candidate of Arts degree in Film Studies and taught courses in the department of film studies.
