Early Life and Education
Sergey Vladimirovich Matvienko was born on May 5, 1973, in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg, Russia. His father, Vladimir Vasilyevich Matvienko, was a retired colonel in the military medical service and a long-time employee of the Military Medical Academy. His mother, Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko, is a prominent politician who served as Governor of Saint Petersburg from 2003 to 2019. Sergey is the only child of his parents.
Matvienko received a higher education in international economics and financial and credit management. He also studied management and financial control in the United States, studying the systems of major corporations. In 2002, he earned a Doctorate of Economics with a dissertation on the financial and organizational mechanism for the development of innovative businesses.
Early Career
In 1992, Matvienko began working as a manager at the Augustina Joint-Stock Investment Fund. However, in 1994, he became involved in a robbery and assault case, leading to his brief detention and subsequent release.
Business Career
Following the incident, Matvienko established several companies. In August 1995, he co-founded Severnaya Feeriya LLC with Ekaterina Borisovna Vershinskaya. In March 1997, he established and became the head of Zodchy LLC.
Matvienko held various roles in the financial sector, including at LenVneshtorg, Inkombank, and the Baltic Financial Agency. He also served as head of the information technology department at a bank in Saint Petersburg.
Banking Career
In May 2003, Matvienko was appointed Vice President for Information Technology at Bank Saint Petersburg. He rose through the ranks, becoming a major shareholder in the bank.
In 2005, VTB Group offered Matvienko a loan of $40 million to purchase shares in VTB. In November 2005, he joined VTB as Senior Vice President and Director of the IT Department.
Additional Information
Matvienko is married to singer Zara Mgoyan, known as Zlata, a Kurdish-born artist who converted to Christianity. The couple married in 2004 but divorced soon after.
Matvienko has purchased an island in Estonia, where he has embarked on the construction of an exclusive cottage community.
