Early Career and Club Success
Mart Poom is an Estonian former professional goalkeeper and current sporting director of Estonian club Levadia Tallinn. His playing career spanned over a decade and saw him represent numerous clubs and the Estonian national team.
After making his debut for Tallinna Sadam in 1992, Poom established himself as a reliable goalkeeper. He played for several Estonian clubs before making history by becoming the first goalkeeper from a former Soviet country to play in Italy.
Stints in Russia and Estonia
In 2003, Poom joined Russian Premier League club Rotor Volgograd, where he played every league match without being substituted. He later moved to Tom Tomsk, where he captained the team. In 2015, Poom returned to Levadia Tallinn, where he played his final match in October of that year.
International Career
Poom made his international debut for Estonia in 1996. He amassed 64 appearances for his country before announcing his retirement in 2015. He returned for one final farewell match in November 2015, leading Estonia to a 3-0 victory over Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Post-Retirement and Managerial Roles
After retiring as a player, Poom joined Levadia Tallinn as sporting director in 2016. He also served as assistant coach to Igor Prins during the second half of 2016. In 2021, Poom stepped down as sporting director.
