Early Life and EducationSergei Pavlenko was born on May 5, 1952, in Sumy, Ukraine. He grew up in Rostov-on-Don, and at age 24, he joined the Moscow Conservatory, studying composition under Nikolai Sidelnikov and instrumentation under Edison Denisov.
Musical Director of the Taganka Theatre
In 1976, Pavlenko became the musical director of the Taganka Theatre. He collaborated on several productions, including "The Master and Margarita," "Crime and Punishment," and "Three Sisters." He also composed the music for the play "Book of Complaints," based on Anton Chekhov's work.
Composer
In 1982, Pavlenko left the theater to pursue his independent composing career. His works encompassed symphony and chamber music genres. He received commissions from ensembles such as the International Saxophone Ensemble Jean-Marie Londe, the Dutch Clarinet Quartet Henri Bok, and the German horn ensemble Westdeutsches Hornen.
Recognition and Awards
Pavlenko's "Pastorale" for saxophone quintet won the first prize at the International Composers' Competition in Paris in 1988. He was also a laureate of several other international competitions. In 2010, he reached the finals of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition with his "St. Petersburg Dreams," although he was not awarded the prize.
Personal Life and Death
Pavlenko was married to Tamara Kataeva. In 2012, he passed away at the age of 59 in Moscow. His contributions to the musical landscape continue to be remembered and celebrated.
