Biography of Sergey Podgorny

Sergey Podgorny is a Ukrainian actor born in the village of Bucha, near Kiev. He had a passion for ballroom dancing during his early years, particularly enjoying fast dances. However, his attempts to pursue a dance career in Kiev were unsuccessful, and he eventually turned to football. Podgorny showed promise in football but had to give it up after a serious leg injury.

It was during this time that Podgorny's interest in acting was sparked by a chance encounter. He met a girl who was visiting her relatives in Bucha before enrolling in acting courses at the Ivan Franko Theatre. Inspired by her, Podgorny applied to the Kyiv State Institute of Theatre Arts and was accepted.

In a twist of fate, Podgorny was selected by renowned director Leonid Bykov to replace a student who had left the film "Only Old Men Are Going to Battle" midway through production. The film depicted the heroism of Soviet pilots during World War II and was a huge success, propelling Podgorny to national fame.

After graduating from the Kyiv State Institute of Theatre Arts in 1976, Podgorny joined the A. Dovzhenko Kyiv Film Studio. He appeared in various films but mostly in supporting roles that went unnoticed by the wider audience.

Unfortunately, Podgorny's rise to fame was followed by a period of personal and professional struggles. He turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism, feeling frustrated by the lack of interesting roles and the passing of his prime years. Without the presence of his friend and mentor, Leonid Bykov, whom Podgorny deeply respected and who passed away in 1979, he struggled even more.

His personal life was also plagued by difficulties, with failed marriages and a sense of loneliness. As the demand for his acting skills diminished during the post-Soviet era, Podgorny had to find alternative means of income and became a skilled carpenter. However, his struggles with alcoholism continued to persist.
