Early Life and EducationBulgarian politician Sergey Dimitrov Stanishev was born on May 5, 1966, in Kherson, Ukraine. His mother was a Soviet citizen, and he is fluent in Russian. Stanishev received his higher education at Moscow University, where he earned a degree in history.
Political Career
Stanishev entered the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in 1995 and became a member of parliament in 2001. That same year, he was elected leader of both the BSP and the "Coalition for Bulgaria" parliamentary group, succeeding Georgi Parvanov, who had been elected president.
Prime Minister of Bulgaria
In the 2005 parliamentary elections, Stanishev led the BSP to victory, forming a government with representatives from the DPS and Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's party. He became Prime Minister on August 17, 2005.
