Early Life and Education
In 1930, Sergei Alexandrovich Zverev entered the workforce as a laborer. He subsequently pursued his education, graduating in 1936 from the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics.
Career in Defense Industry
Zverev embarked on a successful career in defense industry. In 1936, he assumed design and managerial roles. In 1939, he became Chief Technologist of the State Optical and Mechanical Plant (GOMZ).
Leadership Positions
During World War II, Zverev served as Chief Engineer and Deputy Director of the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant. From 1947 to 1958, he held leadership positions in the Ministries of Armament and Defense Industry.
Government Committee
Between 1958 and 1963, Zverev served as Deputy Chairman and First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers for Defense Technology. From 1963 to 1965, he chaired the State Committee for Defense Technology and held the position of Minister of the USSR.
Minister of Defense Industry
In March 1965, Zverev ascended to the position of Minister of Defense Industry of the USSR. He remained in this role until 1978, overseeing the production of the Soviet Union's defense equipment.
Political Involvement
Zverev became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1942. He served as a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1966 to 1978 and as a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR during its 7th and 8th convocations.
Awards and Recognition
Zverev's contributions to the defense industry were widely recognized. He received the Hero of Socialist Labor distinction, the Lenin Prize, and the State Prize of the USSR. He was also awarded multiple Orders of Lenin and other prestigious honors.
Legacy
After his passing, Zverev's name was bestowed upon the Krasnogorsk Plant and the Leningrad Military Mechanical Technical School. The Optical Society named after D.S. Rozhdestvensky established the S.A. Zverev Medal in 1993 to honor his legacy in the development of optical science and industry.
