Sergio Ahumada: Chilean Football Legend
Early Career and Colo-ColoSergio Ahumada, a prolific Chilean striker, began his football career with Deportes La Serena in his hometown in 1968. Two years later, he joined the legendary Colo-Colo, making his debut on April 12, 1970, in a 0-1 loss to Universidad Católica.
During his four seasons with Colo-Colo, Ahumada played in 128 official matches, scoring 41 goals. He helped the team win two Chilean championships (1970 and 1972), the Chilean Cup (1974), and reached the final of the 1973 Copa Libertadores.
Union Española and Mexican Stint
In 1975, Ahumada joined Union Española, where he once again became Chilean champion in his debut season. He also reached the final of the 1975 Copa Libertadores. Amidst Union Española's success, Ahumada had a brief stint with Mexican club UAG Tecos in 1975. However, he played only 13 matches and failed to score.
Return to Chile and International Career
Ahumada returned to Chile in mid-1976 to play for Everton in Viña del Mar. He won his third Chilean championship with the club in 1976.
Ahumada had made his international debut for Chile on April 14, 1973, in a friendly against Haiti. He represented his country at the 1974 World Cup, where he scored Chile's only goal of the tournament. He also played in the 1975 Copa América. Ahumada's final match for Chile was a 0-2 loss to Peru in a 1978 World Cup qualifying match on March 26, 1977. In total, he played 28 official matches for his country, scoring 6 goals.
