Sergio Mattarella has served as the President of Italy since February 3, 2015. He is a renowned jurist, politician, and has held various ministerial positions in the Italian government.

Early Life and Family

Born on July 23, 1941, in Palermo, Sicily, to Bernardo Mattarella, a prominent Christian Democratic politician, and Maria Buccellato. Sergio's younger brother, Piersanti Mattarella, was assassinated by the Mafia in 1980. Sergio's early political influences included Alcide De Gasperi, Aldo Moro, and Pope Paul VI.

Education and Career

Mattarella studied law at the University of Rome "La Sapienza," graduating in 1964. He taught constitutional law at the University of Palermo and was admitted to the Palermo Bar in 1967.

Political Involvement

After his brother's murder, Mattarella entered politics. He joined the Christian Democratic Party and served on the national commission investigating its involvement in the P-2 Masonic scandal. He was elected to the Italian Parliament in 1983 and served in various roles, including Minister for Relations with Parliament (1987-1989), Minister of Public Education (1989-1990), Deputy Prime Minister (1998-1999), and Minister of Defense (1999-2001).

Mattarellum Law and Judicial Career

Mattarella is known for the "Mattarellum Law" (1993), which established a mixed electoral system in Italy. He was elected to the Constitutional Court in 2011 and became a prominent member.

Presidency

On January 31, 2015, Mattarella was elected President of Italy by a broad majority of Parliament. His inauguration on February 3, 2015, marked a significant political shift, bringing a practicing Catholic and centrist to the presidency.

Personal Life

Mattarella was married to Marisa Chiazzese until her death in 2012. They had three children: Bernardo Giorgio, Laura, and Francesco. Bernardo Giorgio is a prominent law professor at the University of Siena and served in the government of Matteo Renzi.
