A Boy without an Immune System: The Story of Seth Lane

Seth Lane, a British boy deprived of an immune system, has spent a significant portion of his 5 years of life in the hospital due to a congenital genetic mutation that leaves him completely immune deficient.

Struggling with Illness from Birth

Illnesses of varying severity are an unpleasant but necessary part of the growing up process. Children become victims of viruses and bacteria, but their bodies gradually learn to resist these miniature enemies and become stronger in the process. Unfortunately, for Seth Lane, the usual sequence of events does not apply; since birth, he has suffered from a complete absence of an immune system. Any seemingly harmless illness that an ordinary person could easily recover from could be fatal for Seth, as his body is incapable of fighting off infections. Consequently, he has spent a large part of his life in a "bubble" - an entirely sterile environment that protects him from external threats.

Failed Bone Marrow Transplant

For a while, it seemed that a bone marrow transplant could help Seth. However, this idea ended in failure as the transplant was unsuccessful, and his body once again turned against itself. Since January, Seth has not left his hospital room. His doctors are not willing to give up - a second bone marrow transplant is scheduled for him. In the meantime, Seth is not wasting any time. Recently, he recorded a heartfelt video in which he reached out to the world with a peculiar request. The video, which has already garnered over 2 million views, contains a simple recipe to show support for Seth - by wearing yellow. This color, which Seth loves, will serve as a sign that people from all over the world acknowledge, remember, and value him. The "Wear Yellow for Seth" campaign is set to take place on March 27th, and participants are encouraged to share their photos on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram using the hashtag #WearYellowforSeth.

Unexpected Popularity

Seth's parents, Leanne and Nik Lane, expressed their astonishment at the incredible popularity of their son's appeal. The video, created with the help of special yellow cards, went viral, reaching 2.5 million views in just a few days. Hundreds of thousands of people have already expressed their desire to participate in the campaign, willing to wear exclusively yellow clothing on the designated day. The image of Seth, a smiling little boy holding yellow cards with heartfelt messages, has captivated the internet and continues to gain popularity. Leanne Lane herself admits that she never imagined such a massive advertising campaign; initially, she thought that only family and friends would participate in this impromptu flash mob. The "yellow day" has reached an unexpected level, both delighting and overwhelming Leanne.

Seth's Medical Journey

Seth was first admitted to the hospital at 6 months old when he developed a severe respiratory infection. During the examination, it became clear that the problem went beyond a simple bronchitis; he was a victim of a severe form of combined immunodeficiency due to a mutated antibody gene. It was initially believed that a bone marrow transplant could solve the problem, using donated cells from umbilical cord samples. Unfortunately, while waiting for the operation, Seth had to live in a "bubble" - a completely sterile space that posed no threat to his fragile health. However, there was no place in the bubble not only for bacteria and viruses but also for his peers, normal childhood games, or even fresh air outings. Despite the limitations, Seth thrived in the bubble and became noticeably stronger over the course of two years.

Setbacks and Return to the Bubble

After the successful operation, Seth started interacting with other children, attending school, and making friends. However, the path to complete recovery was still far off. In October, it became evident that Seth's body was rejecting the transplanted bone marrow, resulting in a full-scale attack against itself called graft-versus-host disease. Initially, Seth experienced skin problems, with painful inflamed patches appearing on his body. Eventually, the conflict escalated to his own bone marrow, and his immune system failed once again. Seth was forced to return to his secure "bubble" - a highly sterilized single room in the Newcastle Children's Hospital. Now, without the hard-won immune system, he is vulnerable to almost any imaginable external threat. Communication with Seth has also become challenging. Even a simple cold sore prevents his mother from touching him, let alone visiting him while being sick. Everything in the room is rigorously sterilized, the air is constantly purified, and cleaning is conducted at a level that even the most meticulous housewife cannot fathom. Seth's bedding is boiled every day, soft toys are washed only slightly less frequently, and his clothes are regularly sterilized. Until Seth stabilizes, he will have to rely on the knowledge that millions of strangers worldwide support him emotionally.

A Global Wave of Support

Seth is unlikely to fully comprehend the number of people who wish to show their support for him. After all, even 20 is a large number for someone his age. The campaign has already reached an international level, with nearly every country participating in the flash mob. The image of Seth, a smiling little boy holding yellow cards with heartfelt messages, has captivated the internet and continues to gain popularity. Seth's mother, Leanne Lane, never imagined such a massive response, initially thinking that only family and friends would participate in the impromptu flash mob. Now, "Wear Yellow for Seth" has taken on an unexpected level, both delighting and overwhelming Leanne.
