Early Life and Career
Severin Kiefer, born in 1990, discovered his passion for figure skating at a young age. He initially competed as a single skater, achieving some success, including a bronze medal at the Austrian National Championships. In 2008, he made his debut at the Junior World Championships in Sofia.
Debut in Pair Skating
Recognizing the absence of Austrian pair skaters, Kiefer teamed up with Stina Martini in 2009. They competed at the Junior World Championships two years later in The Hague and made their senior debut at the European and World Championships in 2011.
Partnership with Miriam Ziegler
In 2012, Kiefer switched partners to Miriam Ziegler, a former single skater. They became three-time Austrian champions, while Kiefer retired from single skating. Despite Austria not earning a quota in pair skating for the 2014 Olympics, the couple received a wildcard and finished 17th in Sochi.
International Success
Kiefer and Ziegler began the 2015-16 season with a strong performance at the Nepela Memorial, where they broke their personal bests. They went on to win silver at the Nice Cup and placed sixth at the Skate Canada Grand Prix.
Consistency and Improvements
The following season, Kiefer and Ziegler continued to improve their results. They secured a second-place finish at the Nice Cup and participated in the Trophée de France and NHK Trophy Grand Prix events. Despite withdrawing from the 2017 Austrian National Championships, they improved their performances at both the European and World Championships.
Qualification for the Olympics
In September 2017, Kiefer and Ziegler secured a spot for Austria at the 2018 Olympics by finishing just shy of the podium at the Nebelhorn Trophy qualification tournament. They went on to compete in the Russian and Japanese Grand Prix events, further improving their personal bests.
