Early Life and Education
Seyla Benhabib was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Istanbul, Turkey. She attended the American College for Girls in Istanbul before pursuing her studies in the United States at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where she earned her undergraduate degree in philosophy.
Academic Career
After receiving her Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale University at the age of 27, Benhabib returned to Europe and spent over fifteen years in Germany, where she conducted research in the tradition of the Frankfurt School. In 1991, she was invited to the New School for Social Research in New York City. In 1993, she joined the faculty of Harvard University, where she also served as a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Center for European Studies. Since 2000, Benhabib has been a Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at Yale University. She currently holds visiting positions at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Vienna.
Feminist Philosophy
Benhabib is a prominent contemporary philosopher known for her work at the intersection of feminist theory and critical social theory. She is an active participant in the feminist movement.
Multiculturalism and Liberal Democracy
Benhabib's research focuses on the concept of multiculturalism and the tension between its principles and the liberal foundations of Western democracy. She explores the compatibility of "cultural claims" with fundamental conceptions of freedom and equality.
Publications and Editorial Work

Personal Life
Seyla Benhabib is married to the author and journalist Jim Sleeper, who currently teaches political science at Yale University.
