Hossain is believed to be suffering from neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes non-cancerous tumors to grow on the nerves. These tumors have enveloped his entire body from head to toe, rendering him unable to wear clothing above his waist.
Isolation and Fear
The unsightly appearance of his tumors has socially isolated Hossain. Children run away in fear when they see him. His own son, 12-year-old Abdullah, struggles to look at him. "It's hard to live with this pain," says Hossain. "My body feels so heavy."
Financial Burden
Hossain's condition has made it impossible for him to work, leaving his family in financial crisis. The cost of treatment is beyond their means, and they are forced to rely on charity.
Hope for a Cure
Despite the bleak prognosis, Hossain's family clings to the hope of a cure. Doctors have stated that if the tumors are removed, his vision may be restored. The National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital in Dhaka is preparing to conduct diagnostic tests and potential treatment options.
A Wife's Desperation
Hossain's wife, Tajmohel Khatun, faces the emotional toll of caring for her husband while bearing the financial burden. "My husband can't do anything on his own," she says. "We have to help him change his clothes and use the toilet. It's heartbreaking."
A Family's Struggle
The Hossians' financial crisis has not only impacted their medical care but also their son's education. "My husband is sick, and I have to accept it," says Tajmohel. "I got our two daughters married, but our son can't go to school because of our money problems."
A Medical Mystery
Neurofibromatosis is a complex genetic condition that affects one in 3,000 people. The severity of symptoms can vary greatly, but common issues include learning disabilities, vision problems, and high blood pressure.
Associated with the Elephant Man
Neurofibromatosis has been linked with the Elephant Man, Joseph Carey Merrick. Merrick's case, however, was an extreme presentation of the condition, with his skin covered in grotesque growths.
