In the summer of 2023, he and his son, Suleiman, embarked on an expedition to the wreckage of the iconic RMS Titanic, located 3800 meters beneath the Atlantic Ocean. They joined British billionaire Hamesh Harding, French deep-sea diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and American Stockton Rush, founder of the expedition company OceanGate.
Final Journey and Aftermath
A Tragic Loss at SeaOn June 16, the group set sail from Canada aboard the research vessel MV Polar Prince. Two days later, they boarded the submersible Titan and began their descent, with an air supply that would last 96 hours (until the morning of June 22). The first hour and a half proceeded according to plan, with the crew of the submersible communicating every 15 minutes and planning to return by evening. However, after 1 hour and 45 minutes, contact was lost, and the submersible vanished from the radar.
Extensive search and rescue operations were initiated, melibatkan Canada, the United States, and France. On June 22, the wreckage of the submersible was located, and it was confirmed that all crew members had perished. The cause of their deaths remains under investigation, as their bodies were not recovered.
