Renowned Historian, Ethnographer, and Literary Scholar

George Inal-Ipa was an acclaimed historian, ethnographer, and literary scholar of Abkhazian origin. As a member of the Inal-Ipa noble family, he was born in the village of Gup, Ochamchira District, into a family of civil servants.

Academic Achievements

In 1941, Inal-Ipa graduated from the Moscow Industrial-Pedagogical Institute named after K. Liebknecht. He pursued a postgraduate program at the Institute of History, Archeology, and Ethnography of the Abkhazian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1946. In 1948, he obtained his Candidate of Historical Sciences degree with a dissertation on "Marital and Legal Norms of the Abkhaz." His doctoral dissertation, "The Abkhaz," earned him the Doctor of Historical Sciences degree in 1962.

Throughout his career, Inal-Ipa held prominent positions at the Abkhazian Institute of Language, Literature, and History. He served as deputy director from 1968 to 1988 and later as chief researcher from 1988 onward. Inal-Ipa's prolific academic output includes over 100 published works.

Research and Contributions

Inal-Ipa actively participated in numerous All-Union and regional sessions and conferences from 1948 onwards. He also attended World Congresses in Moscow (1964) and Chicago (1973), where he shared his insights on Abkhazian history and culture. His research covered a broad range of topics, including social, economic, and cultural aspects of Abkhazian society. His work significantly contributed to the understanding of Abkhazian history, customs, and traditions.

Personal Life

George Inal-Ipa was married to Mira Konstantinovna Khotelashvili, a historian who worked at the Abkhazian National Museum.
