Early Life and Education

On February 23, 1953, in Sukhum, the prominent Abkhazian historian, writer, and political figure Stanislav Lakoba was born. After completing his studies at the History Faculty of Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute, he embarked on a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and influential contributions to his field.

Academic Career and Research

From 2000 to 2004, Lakoba gained valuable international experience as a visiting professor at the Slavic Research Center of Hokkaido University in Japan. During this time, he published numerous monographs on the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict and the recent history of Abkhazia. Upon his return, he became a professor at Abkhazian State University, where he continued to write extensively on archaeology, history, politics, and culture in the Caucasus region.

Political Career

Lakoba's involvement in politics dates back to the Georgian-Abkhazian War of 1992-1993. As a member of the Supreme Council (parliament) of the Republic of Abkhazia from 1991-1996, he played a significant role in the country's independence movement. He served as First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council from 1993-1994 and as First Vice-Speaker from 1994-1996, allying himself closely with President Vladislav Ardzinba.

Opposition to Authoritarianism and Peacebuilding

From 1996 onwards, Lakoba aligned himself with the opposition, actively criticizing the authoritarian nature of the presidential elections in Abkhazia. He participated in the Geneva Process, initiated by the UN with Russian mediation, seeking to resolve the conflict peacefully. In recent years, he has been involved in informal Georgian-Abkhazian meetings in Austria and Germany as part of the "Berghof Center" and the non-governmental organization "Conciliation Resources."

Presidential Ambitions and Support for Ankvab

In the 2004 presidential elections, Lakoba ran as a vice-presidential candidate alongside Sergei Bagapsh. However, in the interests of maintaining internal unity, he withdrew from the race in favor of Raul Khajimba. He later served as Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Abkhazia from 2005 to 2009. During the 2011 presidential elections, Lakoba endorsed Aleksander Ankvab, recognizing his unique qualities and expertise in leading a complex society.
