American Bioastronaut: Shannon Lucid

Early Life and Education

Shannon Lucid, a trailblazing American astronaut and biochemist, was born in Shanghai, China to Baptist missionaries Oscar and Myrtle Wells. With roots in Bethany, Oklahoma, she pursued her higher education at the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1973.

NASA Astronaut Selection

In 1978, Lucid's exceptional credentials led to her selection as an astronaut for NASA. Notably, she was the only one of six female candidates who had children at the time. From 2002 to 2003, she served as NASA's chief scientist.

Shuttle Missions

Lucid's first space mission was on the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-51G) in 1985. She subsequently flew as a mission specialist on STS-34 (1989), STS-43 (1991), and STS-58 (1993).

Long-Duration Stay on Mir

In 1996, Lucid embarked on a groundbreaking mission to the Russian space station Mir. She spent a record-breaking 188 days in space, including 179 days aboard the station. During her time on Mir, she conducted numerous medical and physical experiments. Her record stood until astronaut Sunita Williams surpassed it in 2007.

CAPCOM and Later Missions

Following her historic mission on Mir, Lucid served as a CAPCOM (capsule communicator) for multiple Shuttle missions from 2005 to 2009. She provided critical support and guidance to orbital crews during emergencies and other mission-critical events.

Honors and Accolades

Shannon Lucid's remarkable achievements earned her numerous honors and accolades. In 1996, she received the prestigious Congressional Space Medal of Honor, becoming the first woman and tenth person to be so honored. She was also inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.

Personal Life

Lucid married Michael F. Lucid from Indianapolis and together they have two daughters and a son, as well as five granddaughters.
