Biography of John Lynch Phillips
John Lynch Phillips, an American astronaut, flight engineer, and a doctor of science, was born on April 15, 1951, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, USA. He spent his childhood in Scottsdale, Arizona, a city he considers his hometown.
Education
In 1966, Phillips attended high school in Scottsdale, Arizona. He then went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy in 1972, earning a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Russian Language. In 1974, he obtained a Master's degree in Aerospace disciplines from the University of West Florida. Phillips furthered his education by earning a Master's degree in Geodesy from the University of California in 1984. In 1987, he completed his doctoral degree in Geodesy from the University of California.
Service in the US Navy
After graduating from the United States Naval Academy and completing naval aviation pilot training, Phillips served in various aviation units of the US Navy at military bases in the United States and on aircraft carriers. He later worked at NASA institutions and participated in programs for the Pioneer-Venus and Ulysses interplanetary mission support.
Space Exploration
In April 1996, Phillips joined the NASA astronaut corps. His first spaceflight took place from April 19 to May 1, 2001, as a flight specialist aboard the space shuttle "Endeavour." The mission lasted for 11 days, 21 hours, 30 minutes, and 00 seconds.
Awards and Honors
Phillips has been honored with numerous military medals, as well as the NASA Space Flight Medal in 2001.
Personal Life
John Lynch Phillips is married to Laura Jean Doell, and they have two children. Outside of his professional life, Phillips enjoys sports and spending time with his family.
