The Oldest Mother in the UK Gives Birth to Triplets at 55 with IVFSharon Catt, a 55-year-old British woman, has become the oldest mother in the UK to give birth to triplets. Her adult son claimed that she was too old to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). Sharon, a resident of Boston, Lincolnshire, gave birth to the triplets on March 21, 2016. Her 40-year-old boyfriend, Stuart Reynolds, is the father of the triplets.
A Mother of Seven
As a mother of seven children, Sharon spent £22,000 on IVF in Cyprus because the National Health Service deemed her too old for the procedure. Her 21-year-old son, fitness trainer Carl, supported this opinion. He said, "I will always be there, always support my mother, but I did not agree with IVF. Of course, I worried about her health because she was already 55. Such a thing is a huge challenge for a 55-year-old. At this age, it is time to relax and enjoy life, but now my mother will have to start all over again." However, he added, "I am glad that my mom and Stuart got what they both wanted. Stuart did not have any children, so this was his last chance. Mom and Stuart look exhausted, but I am sure they will establish a routine, and then there will be relief.”
The Glamorous Grandma
Sharon, a glamorous grandmother of four grandchildren and a certified medical nurse, had Botox injections right in the maternity ward. She also underwent a hair extension procedure. Sharon took this risk because she wanted to look her best when the triplets arrived. She said, "I only had a little Botox injected because, you know, you should not do such a thing during pregnancy."
The Journey to Parenthood
The National Health Service in the UK performs IVF on women up to the age of 42, so Sharon and Stuart flew to Cyprus. Sharon had already gone through menopause, so they had to use eggs from another woman who resembled Sharon. The eggs were fertilized with Stuart's sperm in the laboratory before being placed directly into Sharon's womb.
A Challenging Pregnancy
Sharon's ex-husband left the family many years ago. From that marriage, she has four children: Emma, now 26; Sam, 23; Carl, 21; and Amy, 19. The fact that her triplets would be younger than her grandchildren did not bother her. She stated that the trio, Mason, Ryan, and Lily, would have many playmates.
A Miracle Happened
Sharon admits that not all of her older children were convinced that experiencing motherhood again at such a mature age was a good idea. One of her sons said that Sharon was "too old" and that she would "get fat" after giving birth. However, Sharon, a former marathon runner and fitness enthusiast, said she was well-prepared for what every new parent goes through, including sleepless nights.
A Joyful Arrival
Having raised four wonderful children, Sharon is ready every day to handle 24 feedings and change 21 diapers for Mason, Ryan, and Lily. Doctors warn that the risk of complications during pregnancy increases with the mother's age. Women of advanced age also have a higher chance of giving birth to a baby with congenital defects.
IVF Procedure and Success
IVF is recommended for women who have unsuccessfully tried to conceive through "regular unprotected sex" for two years. IVF is also advised for those who have gone through twelve unsuccessful cycles of artificial insemination. According to data from 2010, only 1.9% of births through IVF had mothers over the age of 44.
Overall, Sharon and Stuart took a £15,000 loan to pay for the medical bills, in addition to using £7,000 from their personal savings. Sharon's pregnancy was associated with problems, and doctors advised "removing" one of the triplets to preserve the mother's health. However, Sharon, who spent eleven weeks in the hospital under the care of Nottingham University Hospital, refused to take such a drastic step. The triplets were born via cesarean section, and each baby weighed around 1.8-2.2 kg.
