Childhood and Early Life
Shaul Meirov was born in 1899 in Dvinsk, Latvia. His family later moved to Mohyliv-Podilsky, Ukraine, where he developed an interest in military affairs. At age 12, he immigrated to Palestine and studied at the Herzliya Gymnasium.
Zionist Activism
A member of the kibbutz Kinneret and the Achdut Ha'avoda socialist party, Shaul participated in the defense of Tel Hai in 1920, a pivotal battle in Zionist history. He subsequently became involved in organizing illegal Jewish immigration to Palestine, leading the Mossad Le'aliyah Bet.
Military and Intelligence Service
In the 1930s, Shaul helped establish the Hagana intelligence service, which later became known as Shai. He also coordinated the smuggling of weapons for Hagana and the acquisition of agricultural land using the "homa u'migdal" method.
Founder of Mossad Le'aliyah Bet and Na'tiv
After the establishment of the State of Israel, Shaul led Mossad Le'aliyah Bet, assisting in the immigration of Jewish refugees from Europe. In 1951, he was appointed head of the Na'tiv office, an organization dedicated to facilitating the repatriation of Soviet Jews to Israel.
Historical and Cultural Contributions
Shaul Aviezer (formerly Meirov) was a key figure in the documentation of Zionist history, authoring and contributing to works such as "History of the Hagana" and his memoirs, "With the Generation of the Hagana." He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Museum of the Hagana and the Concise Jewish Encyclopedia.
Honors and Recognition
For his exceptional contributions to Israel, Shaul Aviezer received the Israel Prize in 1973 and an honorary doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the same year. He passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent military leader, intelligence officer, and Zionist activist.
