Shawn Fanning was born in 1980 in Brockton, Massachusetts. He attended Harwich High School, where he developed a passion for baseball and worked for his uncle's internet company during the summers. This experience shaped his future career as an internet entrepreneur and programmer.
In 1998, Fanning enrolled at Boston's Northeastern University, but he was already fully immersed in his project to create an internet service. For several months, he worked tirelessly from home to develop his system. In early 1999, Napster was launched. Fanning's friend, Sean Parker, also played a significant role in the creation of Napster and later became known as the president of Facebook.
Napster quickly gained popularity, becoming the fastest-growing service in the world. However, its success was short-lived as it clashed with the music industry's concept. Fanning faced backlash from prominent figures in the music industry, including Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, who demanded that Fanning stop allowing users to download their music through Napster. Eventually, Napster was forced to shut down due to a lawsuit from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Despite its closure, the idea of a music-sharing service continued to be revolutionary. Fanning's next project was Snocap, a B2B music distributor that incorporated a payment system to prevent the spread of counterfeit content. Snocap's technology later became the basis for the music-selling service on MySpace. In 2008, Fanning's company was sold to imeem.
In 2006, Fanning once again made waves with Rapture, a social network for MMORPG gamers, primarily World of Warcraft players. The company was later acquired by Electronic Arts for $15 million. Fanning briefly remained with Electronic Arts before leaving the team in 2009.
Afterward, Fanning embarked on another project called Path.com. As of 2009, he was living in San Francisco, California, with an estimated income of $7.5 million. Fanning's contributions to the internet and music industries have solidified his status as a notable internet entrepreneur and programmer.
