Breast Cancer Diagnosis: A Journey of Resilience

After a family vacation, an American woman named Shona Bunch noticed blood in her breast milk, an unsettling discovery that led to a breast cancer diagnosis. The initial diagnosis indicated stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but surgery revealed the presence of DCIS in multiple ducts and a larger tumor size, prompting Shona to undergo a mastectomy with reconstruction.

Treatment Options and a Holistic Approach

Six weeks after surgery, Shona faced a difficult decision as different oncologists offered varying treatment recommendations. She ultimately chose a physician and underwent her first chemotherapy session in December 2012. However, the side effects of chemotherapy, including sleep disturbances, emotional distress, and nausea, proved unbearable for Shona as she juggled the demands of chemotherapy and raising her three children.

Finding Support and Hope at CTCA

Shona's mother suggested reaching out to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), an organization known for its alternative treatment approaches. After a consultation in January 2013, Shona was deeply impressed by the CTCA's approach, which included a team of professionals encompassing not only oncologists but also a dietitian, naturopath, chaplain, and other specialists.

A Multifaceted Approach to Care

CTCA's holistic focus extended beyond treating the cancer to treating Shona as a whole person. She received intravenous injections of trastuzumab (Herceptin) every few weeks, with the team working together to manage side effects. A home health aide and a Mind-Body Medicine counselor provided support throughout her treatment, helping Shona feel valued and empowered.

A Personal Transformation

The cancer diagnosis came as a shock to 30-year-old Shona, and explaining her illness to her children was an emotional challenge. However, the experience led her to re-evaluate life's priorities. Initially filled with anger and despair, Shona gradually transformed her perspective, viewing the situation as a gift that allowed her to cherish family time.

Gratitude and Recovery

Shona credits the CTCA's Mind-Body Medicine counselors with helping her transition from bitterness to gratitude. They emphasized the importance of self-care, resilience, and the role of exercise in supporting overall well-being.

Expressing Appreciation

Shona expresses heartfelt gratitude to the CTCA team, including her oncologist, Dr. Randolph, whose empathy and compassion set an example of exceptional patient care. She also acknowledges her husband and children, whose love and support provided unwavering motivation during her journey.
