Early Life and Musical Family

Sheila Escovedo was born in Oakland, California, to percussionist Pete Escovedo. Her musical lineage extends to her uncles: Alejandro, Javier, and Mario Escovedo, who have all made significant contributions to the music industry. Her biological niece is Nicole Richie.

Early Success and Collaboration with Prince

Escovedo released her first recording in 1976 and soon gained recognition for her drumming skills. By the age of 20, she had worked with notable artists such as George Duke, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross. In 1978, she met Prince during a performance with her father. Prince predicted they would collaborate, and Escovedo later joined him for the recording of "Purple Rain." She provided backing vocals on "Let's Go Crazy" and "Erotic City."

Touring and Relationship with Prince

Escovedo toured with Prince in support of "Purple Rain" and began a romantic relationship with him. In 1984, she recorded several hit singles and continued to tour with Prince.

Post-Prince Era and Career Highlights

After parting ways with Prince in 1989, Escovedo's albums received mixed success. She led the band for the short-lived talk show "The Magic Hour" in 1998. In 2001, 2003, and 2006, she performed with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. She participated in Phil Collins' cover of "True Colors" and toured with Abe Laboriel Band in New Zealand in 2004.

Later Collaborations and Recognition

Escovedo performed at the Latin Grammy Awards in 2007 alongside Juan Luis Guerra. She was a judge on the Fox reality show "The Next Great American Band." In 2008, she reunited with Prince at a family concert.

Philanthropy

Beyond her musical career, Escovedo is actively involved in philanthropy. She co-founded the Elevate Hope Foundation with singer Lynn Mabry to support children in need.
