Biography of Sherri Martel
Sherri Russell, known by her ring names Sherri Martel, Sensational Sherri, Sister Sherri, Peggy Sue, Sensuous Sherri, and Queen Sherri, was an American professional wrestler (diva) and manager. She was born on February 8, 1958, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
Early Life and Career
Sherri was introduced to the world of professional wrestling as a child when her mother took her and her sisters to a show in Mississippi. In 1974, she approached "Grizzly" Smith with hopes of becoming a wrestler, but he told her to come back in five years when she was older.
After getting married for the second time and having a son named Jared, Sherri began working as a stripper but still maintained her interest in wrestling. She started training under Butch Moore in Memphis, Tennessee and made her debut as "Sherri Martin" in 1981. However, she realized she needed more training and joined the Fabulous Moolah's School of Wrestling. Moolah changed her name to "Sherri Martel" and sent her to wrestle in Japan in 1981.
AWA and WWF
Sherri returned to Tennessee and became a manager for Jim Cornette. During a mixed battle royal match, she suffered a serious injury, which led her to take a break from wrestling for a few years. She then became the manager of the Heavenly Bodies, a team consisting of Pat Rose and Tom Prichard, and also wrestled alongside them.
Larry Zbyszko helped her break into the AWA promotion, and she debuted on September 28, 1985, in Chicago at the event "SuperClash," where she defeated Candi Devine and became the AWA Women's World Champion. However, she lost the title shortly after her victory over Devine on June 28, 1986, before leaving the AWA.
After Jesse Ventura recommended her to the WWF, Sherri made her debut on July 24, 1987, defeating the Fabulous Moolah. She changed her name to "Sensational Sherri" and held the WWF Women's Championship for 15 months until she lost it to Rockin' Robin. She then transitioned to managing female wrestlers in the WWF, including Shawn Michaels, for whom she also performed his entrance theme song "Sexy Boy."
Later Career and Legacy
On the eve of WrestleMania 21 in 2005, Sherri was involved in a storyline with Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle, and she parodied Michaels' entrance theme with Kurt Angle on the wrestling program "SmackDown!" She was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in April 2006.
Sherri made her final appearance on television on September 21, 2006, on the program "TNA Impact!" Sadly, on June 15, 2007, at the age of 49, Sherri Martel passed away in her mother's home in McCalle, Alabama. It was later revealed that her cause of death was accidental overdose of several medications, including a large amount of oxycodone.
In 2009, Sherri Martel was posthumously inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame.
