His wrestling career spans over three decades, beginning with his debut on December 9, 1965, in Amarillo, Texas. In the 1970s, Terry became the winner of the Deathmatch in Texas.
Early Career and Success
As a second-generation wrestler, one of two brothers in the ring, Terry easily established the reputation and a devoted fanbase. In 1975, Terry Funk held the heavyweight champion title for fourteen months before finally losing it to Harley Race in Toronto. After the grueling season, he took a short break and went on tour with his brother in Texas, Florida, and Detroit. The Funk brothers achieved many successes during their athletic careers, including winning championships in Japan, America, Canada, and even on television. Terry's wrestling style changed as he matured, starting with a classic, "southern" style and eventually transitioning to a heavy and rough, sometimes "dirty" style that still delighted his many fans and followers.
Parallel Career and Retirement
Alongside his wrestling career, Terry Funk actively appeared in movies. Over the years and decades on the wrestling ring, Terry Funk frequently announced his retirement, only to return each time. In 1999, he became the main subject of Barry Blaustein's documentary about wrestling. From 2002 to 2005, Terry Funk was a star in the now-defunct Major League Wrestling.
In 2006, during a tag team match at the "One Night Stand" competition, Terry suffered an injury that almost cost him his eyesight. The barbed wire used in the show turned out to be too dangerous. Although his eyes remained intact, he had to receive several stitches on his face. While scars are seen as badges of honor for wrestlers, reminding them that matches are not only thrilling shows but also grueling battles, Terry's injuries serve as a reminder of the risks he took.
