Early Life and EducationSherry Lansing, born Sherry Lee Duhl on July 31, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, is the daughter of Margo Heymann and David Duhl. Her mother escaped Nazi Germany, and her father was an investment broker who passed away when Sherry was just nine. After graduating high school in 1962, Sherry went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University in 1966, where she was a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
Acting Career and Transition to Film Industry
Sherry Lansing initially pursued an acting career, appearing in the western "Rio Lobo" and the drama "Loving." However, she soon realized her true passion lay behind the camera. After gaining experience at MGM and Columbia Pictures, she became president of 20th Century Fox in 1980, making her the first woman to hold that position.
Paramount Pictures and Blockbuster Success
In 1992, Lansing joined Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group as its chairman of the board. Under her leadership, the studio experienced one of its most successful periods, releasing blockbuster films such as "Forrest Gump," "Braveheart," and "Titanic."
Viacom Buyout and Oscars Honor
When Viacom acquired Paramount in 2004, Lansing's tenure as chairman ended after 12 years. In 2007, she was honored with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, presented by Tom Cruise.
Philanthropy and Civic Engagement
Outside of the film industry, Lansing has been an active philanthropist and civic leader. She served on the Board of Regents of the University of California from 1999 to 2010.
Personal Life
Lansing married director William Friedkin in 1991. They welcomed twins, Jack and Cedric.
