Cancer's Unforeseen Arrival
At 55, Sherry Scoffield initially attributed her symptoms to menopause, but persistent bleeding eventually prompted her to seek medical attention. A biopsy confirmed endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus).
Shocking Diagnosis and Treatment Options
Surgical intervention revealed that the cancer had spread beyond the uterus. Radiation therapy was recommended, but Scoffield sought a second opinion at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). There, she learned that the initially proposed treatment had potential long-term side effects and opted for a less invasive option.
Challenging Radiation Treatment
The radiation therapy was initially well-tolerated, but soon took its toll on Scoffield. She experienced difficulties eating and drinking, necessitating hospitalization for closer monitoring.
Additional Chemotherapy
Dr. Williams recommended two rounds of chemotherapy, which Scoffield underwent despite the potential side effects. The first round was particularly challenging and had to be discontinued.
Unwavering Determination
Despite the physical and emotional toll of treatment, Scoffield's motivation to see her family grow and thrive kept her going. She had four children and two grandchildren at the time of her diagnosis, and now has ten grandchildren.
Gratitude and Renewed Purpose
Scoffield expresses immense gratitude for her recovery, which allows her to live an active and fulfilling life. She researches her family history and volunteers for the Cancer Fighter program.
Long-Term Monitoring and Remission
After treatment at CTCA, Scoffield was declared cancer-free. Initially undergoing quarterly check-ups, she now visits the hospital annually. A thorough exam 13 years after treatment revealed no signs of cancer.
Appreciation for Life's Gifts
Scoffield's experience has reinforced her appreciation for life and its joys. She cherishes time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Each day is a reminder of the preciousness of life.
