Early Life and InfluencesShigeru Kayano, born in the Nibutani Valley in Hokkaido, Japan, played a pivotal role in the Ainu national movement. Despite a childhood marred by poverty and an alcoholic father, his upbringing was greatly influenced by his devout Buddhist mother and his grandmother, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for Ainu folklore. While many Ainu had lost their native language by Kayano's birth, he maintained fluency in both Japanese and Ainu.
Preservation and Promotion
In 1972, Kayano established a museum in Nibutani to showcase traditional Ainu artifacts. Recognizing the dwindling use of Ainu language, he initiated a radio program in 1987 to teach it. This program remains a testament to his efforts to preserve and revitalize Ainu culture. Kayano also authored approximately 100 books on the Ainu language and culture, including 28 volumes of the epic Ainu narrative, "yukar."
Political Representation
In 1994, Kayano became the first Ainu elected to the Japanese parliament. His representation in the upper house marked a significant milestone for the Ainu community. In 1997, largely due to Kayano's advocacy, the parliament passed the "Act for the Promotion of Ainu Culture and the Dissemination of Knowledge Regarding Ainu Tradition." This law recognized the distinct identity and rights of the Ainu people.
