Birth and Early Life
Shirvany Kostoyev was born in 1923. After graduating from the Military Aviation Pilot School in 1941, he embarked on his military career.
Frontline Hero
As a member of aviation regiments, Kostoyev served as a fearless assault pilot during World War II. He completed over 100 combat sorties, displaying exceptional aerial combat skills.
Accolades in the Battle of Kursk
In the pivotal Battle of Kursk, Kostoyev showcased his prowess. During one sortie, he remarkably destroyed 11 German tanks.
Aerial Triumph and Narrow Escape
In an intense воздушный бой, Kostoyev skillfully downed one of three pursuing enemy aircraft. Despite his plane sustaining 17 bullet holes, he managed to land it safely.
Baltic Sea Victory
In April 1945, Kostoyev led his squadron in a bombing mission over the Baltic Sea. His team successfully sank an enemy vessel carrying 125 soldiers and officers.
Air-to-Air Triumph over Königsberg
Kostoyev's achievements extended to the skies over Königsberg, where he shot down a German FW-190 fighter.
Berlin Campaign
After the fall of Königsberg, Kostoyev participated in the liberation of Berlin.
Post-War Service and Honors
Following the war, Kostoyev served in Riga. On August 6, 1949, he tragically lost his life during an aircraft test flight. He was laid to rest in Yulgava, near Riga. Posthumously, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
