Biography of Rabbi Shlomo Goren

Early Life and Education

Born in Zambrów, Poland, Shlomo Goren immigrated to Palestine in 1925. He studied at the Etz Haim and Hebron Yeshivas in Jerusalem.

Military Career

In 1936, Goren joined the Haganah and fought in the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. He founded the IDF Rabbinate and served as its Chief Rabbi from 1948 to 1968.

Chief Rabbinate

In 1968, Goren became Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Tel Aviv. In 1973, he was elected as Chief Rabbi of Israel alongside Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.

Notable Actions and Legacy

- Established the Sephardic nusach as the standard prayer ritual in the IDF

- Enforced Kashrut in the military

- Sounded the shofar at the Western Wall after its liberation in 1967
- Ascended the Temple Mount with a Torah scroll and shofar
