Biography of Shu Qi

Shu Qi is a Taiwanese actress and photo model. Born into a very poor family in Taipei, she moved to Hong Kong at the age of seventeen and began her career as a photo model, posing nude for various erotic magazines. It was in one of these magazines that she was noticed by producer Manfred Wong, who invited Shu Qi to appear in several Hong Kong erotic films, such as "Sex and Zen 2". Over time, she not only showcased her naked body but also demonstrated her acting skills, leading to invitations to more serious films.

Changing Career Path

Shu Qi's career took a turn after meeting director Derek Yee, who cast her in his film "Viva Erotica". The film satirically portrayed the industry of erotic films in Hong Kong, with Shu Qi playing a young star of such films. Her performance earned her the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1997. Following this success, Shu Qi began appearing in many popular Hong Kong films, including " Gorgeous" (1999) alongside Jackie Chan, critically acclaimed films like "Island Tales" (1999) by Stanley Kwan, and "Millennium Mambo" by Hou Hsiao-hsien.

Missed Opportunity

In 1999, director Ang Lee invited Shu Qi to play the role of Jen in his film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". However, after six weeks of filming, her manager Manfred Wong advised her to give up the role and instead shoot a commercial for Coca-Cola in Japan. As a result, the role of Jen went to a young and relatively unknown actress, Zhang Ziyi, who went on to achieve fame as one of the most well-known actresses in Asia. After this setback, Shu Qi fired her manager and became more careful in choosing her roles.

Career Success

In 2002, Shu Qi had two hit films released. She gained some international recognition for her role in the French action film "The Transporter". In Asia, she achieved success in the local production action film "So Close", where she played the lead role. She also had success in the horror film "The Eye 2" in 2004, where she showcased her acting abilities in a new genre.

Overall, Shu Qi has had a diverse and successful career, transitioning from a photo model to a respected actress. She continues to captivate audiences with her talent and versatility on the screen.
