Early Life and Education

Siaosi Sovaleni was born in Ngeleia, Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga. His father, Langi Kavaliku, was a former Deputy Prime Minister. Sovaleni attended Timaru Boys' High School in New Zealand, graduating in 1988. He went on to pursue a Bachelor of Computer Science degree at the University of Auckland, which he completed in 1992. Subsequently, he earned a Master's degree from Oxford University and an MBA from the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

Career in Public Service

From 1996 to 2010, Sovaleni held the position of public servant in Tonga's Ministry of Finance. He later worked with the Pacific Community and the Asian Development Bank. In 2013, he returned to Tonga to serve as CEO of the Ministry of Public Enterprises.

Political Journey

Sovaleni was first elected to the Tongan Legislative Assembly in the 2014 general election. He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Environment and Communications in ʻAkilisi Pohiva's cabinet. As Minister of Communications, he pushed forward two bills in 2015 that allowed for internet censorship.

In September 2017, Sovaleni was dismissed for disloyalty after King Tupou VI decided to dismiss the Prime Minister, dissolve Parliament, and call for fresh elections. He stood in the 2017 Tongan general election and was re-elected as the only non-DPFI MP from Tongatapu. He subsequently ran for Prime Minister against Pohiva but lost by 12 votes to 14.

After the death of ʻAkilisi Pohiva, Sovaleni supported Pohiva Tuʻiʻonetoa as Prime Minister. He was appointed Minister for Education and Training in Tuʻiʻonetoa's cabinet.

Elevation to Prime Ministership

In January 2021, Sovaleni received the Huʻakavameiliku title, which had also been held by his father. He was re-elected in the 2021 elections, receiving the highest number of votes of any candidate in any constituency. In the post-election negotiations, he emerged as one of two frontrunners for the position of Prime Minister, alongside ʻAisake Eke. On December 15, 2021, he was elected Prime Minister, defeating Eke with 16 votes. Eke has since stated that he will challenge the election results in court. Sovaleni was officially appointed Prime Minister on December 27, 2021.
