Sibilla Aleramo, a pioneering Italian writer and feminist, was born Rina Faccio in the province of Alessandria. Forced to leave school and marry at the tender age of 16, she later recounted her harrowing experience of marital rape in her debut novel.

Breaking Free

In 1901, Aleramo made the bold decision to leave her abusive husband and son behind, relocating to Rome. This transformative experience provided the inspiration for her first literary work, recounting her journey of liberation. In Rome, she immersed herself in artistic and political circles, penning works that explored themes of feminism and lesbianism.

Feminist Activism

Aleramo's passion for social justice extended beyond her writing. She dedicated herself to establishing schools in the Roman countryside and even corresponded with Maxim Gorky and Maria Andreeva, whom she met in 1912. Through her connections, she befriended the physician, writer, and translator Olga Signorelli.

Lesbian Love and Inspiration

In 1908, Aleramo's life took a profound turn when she met Cordula Lina Poletti, a fellow feminist and writer. Their year-long lesbian relationship became the catalyst for Aleramo's acclaimed novel, "Il passaggio" (The Transition). Her intimate correspondence with Poletti has since become a valuable resource for scholars studying lesbian relationships.

Communism and Later Years

As she grew older, Aleramo continued to play an active role in Italian society, joining the Communist Party after World War II. She traveled extensively throughout Europe and even visited the Soviet Union in 1952.
