Early Life and Wartime

German composer born in Germany. During World War II, he actively participated in an amateur theater group organized by the Hitler Youth. After the war, he was arrested but later released due to tuberculosis.

Artistic Breakthrough

In 1946, while hospitalized for tuberculosis, he composed his most famous work, the Christmas carol "Thousand Stars - One Cathedral."

Academic and Professional Career

Köhler recovered and studied composition at the Dresden Academy of Music and Drama under Fidelio Finke and Herbert Wiesen. He pursued musicology in Leipzig and became head of the Leipzig District Branch of the Composers' Association of the GDR in 1955.

Leadership and Legacy

In 1957, he was appointed director of the International Music Library in Berlin. From 1963 to 1968, he served as artistic director of the GDR state record label VEB Deutsche Schallplatten. He was rector of the Dresden State College of Music from 1968 to 1980. In 1982, he became chairman of the Composers' Association of the GDR. He was named director of the Dresden Opera in 1983, supervising its ongoing reconstruction until his untimely death before its completion.

Accolades and Recognition

Köhler was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland (1972) and the National Prize of the GDR (1979).
