Siegfried Selberherr: Pioneer in Microelectronics

Academic Background

Siegfried Selberherr is an Austrian scientist and professor in the field of microelectronics at the Institute of Microelectronics, Vienna University of Technology. He received his diploma in electrical engineering and electronics from Vienna University of Technology in 1978. In 1981 and 1984, he obtained his doctorate (Doktor der technischen Wissenschaften) and postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation zum Dozenten) degrees, respectively.

Professional Career

Since 1988, Selberherr has been a full professor at Vienna University of Technology in the field of "Software and Computer Technologies for Microelectronic Systems." He was a visiting researcher at Bell Labs and an IEEE Electron Devices Society Distinguished Lecturer from 1996. From 1998 to 2005, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Vienna University of Technology.

In 2001, Selberherr became a member of the board of directors of ams and, in 2004, a member of the advisory board of the Inter-University Department of Agrobiotechnology (IFA) in Tulln an der Donau. For many years, he headed the Institute of Microelectronics at Vienna University of Technology. After 2016, he continued to be involved in the institute's leadership, with Tibor Grasser taking over as head.

Research Contributions

Throughout his scientific career, Selberherr has published over 350 articles in refereed journals and more than 1,000 conference proceedings, including over 150 invited talks. He has also authored two monographs and edited 30 conference proceedings. Additionally, he has supervised over 100 doctoral dissertations.

Selberherr developed the MINIMOS simulator to study the physical properties of metal-insulator-semiconductor devices, which incorporates the carrier mobility model known as the "Selberherr model." He leads numerous joint research projects with prominent semiconductor companies and funding organizations, such as the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Christian Doppler Research Association (CDG), and the European Research Council (ERC).
