Protestant Missionary and Philologist
In 1841, Sigismund Wilhelm Koelle joined the Missionary School in Basel and was sent to the London Missionary Society in 1845. He subsequently embarked on a mission to Sierra Leone in 1847.
African Studies and Publications
Upon his return in 1853, Koelle published several books based on his observations in Africa. Among them were the "Polyglotta Africana" (1854), a comparative dictionary of over 100 African languages, the "Grammar of the Bornu or Kanuri Language" (1854), and "African Native Literature" (1854), a collection of proverbs, tales, and historical fragments in Kanuri.
Religious Missions and Publications
In 1855, Koelle embarked on another missionary journey to Egypt and Palestine. He then relocated to Constantinople in 1862 and remained there until his return to England in 1880. During this period, Koelle's works primarily focused on religious and publicistic themes.
